LSU AgCenter calls its traffic and wear tolerance exceptional, and it handles dry spells well, but it thins out in shade. TurnKey Grass delivers and installs Bermuda across Gretna wherever the yard gets full sun.

01 · Gretna

Is your Gretna yard sunny enough for Bermuda?

Bermuda wants sun all day. LSU rates its shade tolerance very poor and says it doesn’t grow well in partial shade, let alone heavy shade. That rules out plenty of yards near the river, where houses stand close together and a side yard can spend much of the day in a neighbor’s shadow.

Better candidates are the open lots in the southern subdivisions that filled in after 1958. If one corner of an otherwise sunny lawn sits under a tree, put St. Augustine in that shaded corner and keep the Bermuda in the open.

How does Bermuda cope with Gretna’s wet clay?

Bermuda tolerates drier soil than many turf species, and it’s the grass LSU names for athletic fields and golf courses. Gretna tests it from the other direction. The city’s clays drain very slowly and NOAA’s Gretna station logs about 64 inches of rain a year, so the lawn needs a grade that moves water off before the sod goes down.

Once it’s rooted, water only through dry stretches, about an inch at a time, early in the morning. Our guide on how often to water Bermuda goes into the schedule, and how long Bermuda takes to establish covers the first weeks.

What does Bermuda look like in a Gretna winter?

Brown. LSU’s calendar shows warm-season turf resting roughly November through February, and January nights average about 45 F at NOAA’s Terrytown 3S station, just outside the city. Plan on a tan lawn for a few months. Growth starts again once soil climbs back above 60 F.

LSU lists cold as one of Bermuda’s two big weaknesses, along with shade, yet it still ranks above St. Augustine and centipede for cold tolerance. Read more on Bermuda dormancy in Louisiana winters.

Which Bermuda problems should Gretna owners watch for?

  1. 01

    Fall armyworms, June to November

LSU says armyworms commonly target Bermuda, run 4 or more generations a year and can wreck a lawn in one night. Walk the yard often from late summer into fall.

  2. 02

    Bermudagrass decline

That’s the name take-all root rot goes by on Bermuda. Long rainy spells and soil pH above 6.5 favor it, which matters on the alkaline river-end clay, where typical readings sit near 7.3.

  3. 03

Creeping where you don’t want it

Common Bermuda sets seed and spreads, and LSU treats it as a weed once it gets into St. Augustine, centipede or zoysia. Hybrid types are sterile and won’t spread from seed, but their runners still need edging on tight lots.
