LSU AgCenter calls it a low-maintenance grass for acid, low-nitrogen soils. On the wrong soil it yellows or fades, so we look at pH before we suggest it.

Where in Kenner does centipede grow well?
LSU puts centipede’s ideal pH at 5 to 6 and warns that leaves can yellow above 7. Kenner’s soils run from acid near the river to alkaline in parts of the middle, so the answer changes with your street.
Those are typical values from NRCS soil data, not readings from your yard. The LSU AgCenter soil testing lab gives you the real number, and the parish extension office can supply sample boxes.

| Kenner soil | Usual surface pH | Centipede verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Cancienne silt loam (river end, Old Kenner) | Around 5.7 | Good match; the best drained ground in the city too |
| Westwego clay | Around 6.2 | Workable; LSU says centipede does fine in the mid 6s but grows lighter in color |
| Schriever clay | Around 7.3, as high as 8.4 | Poor fit; expect yellowing |
| Kenner muck, drained | Varies, often near neutral | Test first; the series ranges from moderately acid to moderately alkaline |

Why does centipede struggle in Kenner’s wettest yards?
Centipede wants good drainage and little compaction. LSU’s winter decline sheet says centipede and St. Augustine are the grasses most often hit, and that the damage is worst in poorly drained, low-lying, silty clay soils. Kenner has plenty of ground that fits the description: Schriever clay can stay saturated near the surface from December through April, and pumps hold the water table only a few feet below the drained muck.
Dry weather brings the opposite problem. LSU calls centipede one of the most drought-sensitive turfgrasses around and links drought stress to centipede decline, so October, Kenner’s driest month at 3.70 inches, still needs watching. Wet winters and dry spells both count against it here, which is why we treat grade and drainage as part of the decision.

How little care does centipede need?
Less than any grass we lay, as long as you don’t overdo it. Most centipede trouble comes from too much help.
Going into winter, LSU warns that tall cuts, heavy thatch and fall nitrogen all set centipede up for more freeze damage. Our post on fixing common centipede problems covers the usual symptoms.

- 01
Fertilizer
Fertilizer: About 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, never more than 2. LSU links heavier feeding to decline.
- 02
Mowing
Mowing: Keep it low, roughly 1 to 2 inches. An LSU turf expert calls tall mowing very dangerous for centipede.
- 03
Phosphorus
Phosphorus: Excess phosphorus can lower turf quality, especially in centipede, so let a soil test decide.
- 04
Weed killers
Weed killers: Centipede is sensitive to many common herbicides. Read the label before you spray.

Centipede questions from Kenner homeowners
Can centipede handle kids and dogs?
Not well. LSU says it does not tolerate traffic or compaction, and stressed blades turn purple to red. For a play yard, look at Bermuda sod in Kenner instead.
Will centipede grow under my trees?
It tolerates light shade and declines in heavy shade. LSU ranks it third for shade, behind Kenner St. Augustine sod and zoysia.
What is centipede decline?
LSU describes it as a complex, lethal problem that shows up as large dead or yellow patches in spring. LSU ties it to overfeeding and heavy thatch, with drought stress adding to the damage.
