It spreads at a crawl, so it goes down as sod, and it rewards a little extra care with a fine, even surface.

Who is zoysia a good fit for in Kenner?
If your yard is mostly sun and gets hammered by play, Bermuda sod for sunny Kenner yards recovers faster. If the shade is heavy, St. Augustine under Kenner shade trees is the safer call.

- Lake-side yards shaded by planted trees: That end of Kenner was freshwater marsh with no native forest, so the shade there comes from trees owners put in. Where they block part of the day’s sun, zoysia copes; in LSU AgCenter’s shade ranking of warm-season grasses only St. Augustine places higher, and types differ.
- Backyards that get daily use: LSU gives zoysia high marks for wear and traffic. A worn path heals slowly, though, so plan where people walk before the sod goes in.
- Lots that drain after an inch of rain: Zoysia’s slow regrowth means a patch drowned in a low corner stays thin for a long time. It earns its place on ground that sheds water.
- Owners who keep the mower sharp: Its wiry leaves shred under a worn blade, and LSU suggests a reel mower for a clean cut.

What happens to zoysia when a Kenner yard floods?
Here zoysia’s slow recovery becomes a local issue. Lincoln Manor is the city’s documented repeat flooding area, with base flood elevations from 6 feet below sea level up to sea level, and Kenner’s own report says rainfall above an inch can strain the pumps there. Much of the lake side sits on Kenner muck, a drained marsh soil with a water table held a few feet down by pumps.
A patch of zoysia thinned by standing water won’t knit back in a few weeks the way a fast spreader might. That makes grading the low spots before installation worth more on a zoysia job than on most. We cover that work on the Kenner sod installation page.

Which Kenner soils suit zoysia?
- 01
pH
LSU puts zoysia’s ideal pH at 6 to 7. Westwego clay surfaces in Kenner typically test around 6.2, right in range. Cancienne silt loam near the river runs a bit more acid, near 5.7, and Schriever clay often sits above 7. An LSU AgCenter soil test before you buy tells you where your yard falls.
- 02
Compaction
LSU notes zoysia does not like compacted soil, because its shallow roots struggle in it. Westwego and Schriever are very fine clays that drain slowly, so loosening the top few inches during prep matters for this grass. Our post on preparing a lawn for zoysia walks through it.

How do you keep zoysia healthy in Kenner?
Thatch is the long game. LSU warns that without periodic dethatching or topdressing, you can lose a zoysia lawn to excess thatch. Feed it lightly, no more than 2 pounds of N on each 1,000 square feet annually from midspring to midsummer, and mow at 1 to 2 inches, a little higher in shade. LSU lists billbugs, nematodes, rust and brown patch among its problems, and it’s susceptible to large patch when spring and fall nights run mild. Cold is the one thing you can stop worrying about: zoysia has high cold tolerance, and Kenner is USDA zone 9b.

Zoysia questions from Kenner homeowners
How long until new zoysia sod roots in?
LSU’s general guide for sod is 30 to 60 days. Lift a corner gently; if it resists, roots have taken hold.
Does zoysia need less water than other grasses?
LSU says it tolerates dry soil better than other common turfgrasses. In Kenner, with over 60 inches of rain a year, the bigger risk is usually too much water.
Can I mix zoysia with the St. Augustine I already have?
We’d lay one grass per area. They grow at different speeds and mow at different heights, so a mixed patch looks uneven.
