Is your Kenner yard sunny enough for Bermuda?
LSU rates Bermuda’s shade tolerance as very poor and says it does not grow well in partly or heavily shaded areas. Before you choose it, stand in the yard at a few points in a summer day and count the hours of direct sun. Open front yards and newer lots with young trees are the natural fit.
One warning for the lake side of town. That ground had no native trees, so shade there comes from trees owners planted. If part of your yard sits under a canopy, plan St. Augustine for the shaded corners of a Kenner lot and keep Bermuda where the sun is.

July highs at the airport weather station in Kenner average 91.4 F. Bermuda is built for that; LSU lists high heat and drought tolerance among its strengths, and it tolerates drier soil than many turfgrasses.

The same station averages 63.35 inches of rain a year. Long rainy spells favor take-all root rot, which LSU calls bermudagrass decline when it strikes Bermuda, and soil pH above 6.5 favors it too. Schriever clay in the middle of town has a typical surface reading above that, around 7.3.

Soil pH: LSU puts Bermuda’s sweet spot at 6 to 7, slightly acid. A soil test tells you whether your Kenner yard sits there.
