01 · Kenner
How do we get Kenner ground ready for sod?
Prep here is mostly about water. A yard that looks flat can still hold standing water on Westwego or Schriever clay, and new sod should not sit in it. So the visit comes first, then the work below. Your estimate spells out which steps your yard needs.

Mark the utility lines
LSU AgCenter tells homeowners to contact Louisiana 811 before tilling. Call 811 or use the homeowner request on Louisiana One Call before any digging, and give the locators time to mark the yard.

Clear the old lawn and loosen the soil
Old turf and weeds come out, because sod needs bare, loose soil under it. LSU’s sod guide calls for tilling 4 to 6 inches deep, pulling debris and working in lime or fertilizer only where a soil test calls for it.

Shape the yard to shed rain
We fill low spots and set the surface so water runs off. An older LSU guide notes that a 1 percent slope or a slight crown can head off drainage trouble later. On the lake side, where pumps keep the water table only a few feet down, that small fall matters.

Match the sod to the ground
LSU advises buying sod grown on soil similar to yours, since a mismatch changes how water soaks in and drains. We talk through that when we pick the grass with you.

Do you need a city permit for fill in Kenner?
Sometimes. The City of Kenner says all development, regardless of location, needs a permit to build, fill or do other development work, issued by the Department of Inspections and Code Enforcement. Its flood page also asks residents to check with that department before filling or dredging. We found no separate rule for topping up a lawn, so if your yard needs more than a little soil in the low spots, call the department first. Their floodplain development permits page lists the contact.
One more city rule applies on install day: dumping debris in street catch basins is prohibited. Our crews keep stripped turf, loose soil and trimmings out of the drains at the curb.

When is the right month to lay sod in Kenner?
You can lay sod here any month, but some months give it a far easier start. The airport weather station inside Kenner sets the numbers below.
LSU notes that warm-season grass grows slowly once soil drops below 70 F and stops below 60 F, so a late fall job takes longer to root.

How should you water new sod in Kenner’s weather?
Right after we finish, the sod and the soil under it get soaked until both are moist, without water running off. LSU’s sod sheet then calls for watering 1 to 2 times a day for the first 10 to 14 days while the grass is actively growing. After two weeks, water less often but longer, so roots chase moisture deeper.
Kenner adds a twist. With more than 60 inches of rain a year, a heavy storm can do a day’s watering for you, and on clay or muck the extra cycle just makes mud. Check the soil with a finger before the sprinkler runs. LSU says roots may appear in 30 to 60 days; lift a corner to check. Once it’s rooted, LSU allows a light first feeding of up to 0.5 lb of nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet, and the first mow on ground that isn’t saturated.
